What to Pack for Margarita Island: The Caribbean Packing Guide

Margarita is a tropical island in the Venezuelan Caribbean. The climate is warm all year, life revolves around the beach and restaurants, and there are no high altitudes or cold nights. Luggage can be light — if you know what to bring.

Documents and money

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Cash in dollars or euros — the de facto currency for tourists
  • International debit/credit card as backup (acceptance varies)
  • Travel insurance with emergency medical coverage

Clothes: less is more

Daytime temperatures hover around 28–32 °C. Light, breathable, quick-dry clothing is all you need. For dinner at restaurants or if air conditioning is very cold (common on the island), bring a light layer. You do not need long trousers, warm clothing or formal shoes.

  • 3–4 swimsuits (they dry quickly but you will wear a different one each day)
  • Shorts, t-shirts and light dresses
  • One slightly smarter shirt/top for dinner
  • Sandals for the beach and closed shoes for walking
  • A sarong or microfibre beach towel

Sun protection: absolute priority

The Caribbean sun is intense and the reflection off the water amplifies it. Bring sunscreen from home — on the island it is more expensive and the range is limited. Minimum SPF 50. Add a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protection sunglasses and a lycra rash guard if you plan to spend long periods in the water.

Beach gear

  • Snorkel mask — Pampatar reef is worth it
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent (especially for evenings near vegetation)

What you do not need to bring

  • Power adaptor — voltage is 110V like the US, type A/B plug
  • Large towels — the apartments provide them
  • Bottled water — buy it there
  • Warm clothing — none at all
If you fly with carry-on only, you save on baggage fees and move faster. For a week on Margarita, it is perfectly possible.
