The Hidden Beaches of Margarita Island That Locals Know

Margarita's most famous beaches — El Agua, Pampatar, El Yaque — are famous for a reason. But the island has hundreds of kilometres of coastline and many corners that do not appear in tourist guides. These are the ones we recommend to our guests.

Playa Guacuco

On the northeast of the island, Guacuco is a long beach with medium waves perfect for bodyboarding and palm trees that offer some shade. It is not on the main tourist circuit — visitors are mostly locals on weekends. Access is via a narrow but well-kept road.

Playa La Galera

La Galera is technically part of Pampatar but is separated from the centre by a small headland. The waters are calmer than on the main beach and access is on foot from the harbour. Perfect for quiet mornings; by midday it starts to liven up.

Playa Pedro González

An almost circular bay on the north of the island with very calm waters and a small fishing community. The atmosphere is village-like: simple beach bars, plastic chairs, very little international tourism. The sunset view from the western end of the bay is one of the best on the island.

Playa Puerto Cruz

Small and tucked between cliffs at the northern tip, Puerto Cruz is probably the most beautiful beach that most tourists will never see. Access requires a car with good suspension and a spirit of adventure. Completely worth it.

How to find more hidden spots

The best advice is simple: take secondary roads towards the north and east of the island. Where you see a track leading down towards the sea, there is a high chance it ends on a beach. Bring water, sunscreen and do not count on having mobile signal.

Ask at our apartments about the current favourite beaches — locals know which ones are clean and which have become popular with Caracas visitors this season.
